Sber, at the initiative of the Association of Banks, has implemented a payment technology using the Faster Payments System (FPS) through the Multi-QR platform. Now, users can pay for purchases using mobile applications from any bank that supports FPS by scanning QR codes at two million terminals across Russia.
The Multi-QR platform, along with the technology, will be transferred to the Association of Banks after all legal formalities are completed. This will expand the ecosystem of cashless payments and simplify integration for new participants.
How does the new scheme work?
Now any bank can connect to the system for free. According to several banks, integration takes 2–3 weeks. Customers will be able to pay for purchases by scanning Multi-QR directly from their bank's application, while the entire payment process will remain seamless for the user — it will proceed just like any other transaction via FPS.
Connecting to the new technology requires no additional costs. Banks are exempt from participation fees, and interbank remuneration rates remain at the level of standard FPS rates. For integration, it is sufficient to use the open protocol, which is publicly available on the official website.
Advantages of payment "roaming"
- Expanding opportunities for customers – users will be able to pay for purchases using a QR code, regardless of which bank they have an account with.
- Simplifying integration – banks can connect without additional costs and complex technical changes.
- Increasing competition and accessibility of cashless payments – creating a unified platform for working with QR codes from different banks makes payment more convenient and widespread.
Comments from project participants
Previously, representatives of the Association of Banks emphasized the importance of creating a service to ensure interaction between various payment operators.
Dmitry Malykh, Senior Vice President and Head of the "Transactional Banking" block at Sber, noted:
"In addition to customers getting an even wider choice when paying via Multi-QR, the new service also shows that mutual integration of platforms is possible and does not require large expenditures. Currently, different banks cannot read the QR code of other banks, but our technology solves this problem. That is why we propose not to limit the number of QR code operators in the market, but to carry out work on integrating platforms to seamlessly transfer customers between several operators."
Project prospects
The introduction of the Multi-QR system opens up new opportunities for the development of digital payments in Russia. It is expected that new banks will connect to the system in the coming months, and the spread of technology will lead to an increase in the popularity of cashless payments among the population.
Thus, payment "roaming" will be a significant step in the development of the FPS ecosystem, increase convenience for users, and open up new prospects for the financial market.
