Т2 запустил технологию VoWiFi в Москве и Санкт-Петербурге

Russian operator T2 has expanded the coverage area of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology to Moscow and St. Petersburg. This solution allows subscribers to make calls over Wi-Fi in areas with poor mobile coverage: in basements, high-rise buildings, shopping centers, and abroad. Previously, the service was available in the Tambov Region and the Stavropol Territory, and now covers more than 33 million people. In the coming months, VoWiFi will appear in all regions where the operator is present.

In December 2024, T2 completed the implementation of VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and began testing VoWiFi. The first pilot region was the Tambov Region, then the technology was launched in the Stavropol Territory. At the end of March, VoWiFi became available in Moscow and the Moscow Region, and in early April – in St. Petersburg.

The launch proved to be in demand: since the beginning of March, subscribers have made more than 6 million calls over Wi-Fi, of which 3.5 million were made in the last two weeks in Moscow alone.

Advantages of VoWiFi for users: Stable connection in areas with poor coverage (basements, subways, high-rise buildings). Savings on roaming – calls over Wi-Fi are charged as regular calls, without surcharges. High sound quality thanks to improved infrastructure.

What is needed to connect?

The device must support VoLTE and VoWiFi (most modern smartphones). These functions must be activated in the phone settings. No additional fee is charged – minutes are deducted from the package.

Alexey Dmitriev, Technical Director of T2:

«The launch of VoWiFi is a logical continuation of the implementation of VoLTE. The technology is especially useful when traveling: subscribers can make calls over Wi-Fi without overpaying. In the coming months, we will expand coverage to all regions where T2 operates».
