The company "Basis", operating in the Russian virtualization market, announces the release of the second generation of the software-defined storage system Basis SDS. The new release includes more than 60 improvements and fixes.
Basis SDS is a horizontally scalable platform that allows the customer to assemble a software-defined storage system based on standard server hardware, turning disparate disks in multiple servers into a single reliable storage. In release 2.0, the product's capabilities in terms of storage infrastructure management were significantly expanded, new data protection tools were implemented, zero-copy technology was introduced, and RAM consumption was reduced by 50%.
The new version improves the storage system management tools:
- Mass operations with disks: mass deletion of virtual disks and templates has been implemented both through the web interface and through the API. The ability to move virtual disks between storage routers in bulk has been added. Mass operations for snapshots have also been implemented.
- Flexible disk size management: a function has been added to change the size of virtual disks through the web interface and API, allowing you to adapt existing resources to growing needs without having to recreate virtual disks.
- Extended API interface: a plugin has been added with the ability to manage API functionality through the web interface. API versioning mechanisms have been implemented to ensure compatibility.
Scenarios for managing group operations have been expanded and confirmations have been added for critical operations.
Significant attention was paid to the security and optimization of Basis SDS:
- Expanded OS support: support for extended OS versions has been implemented, including Ubuntu 20, 22, 24 and Astra Linux 1.7, 1.8. Basis SDS will also work on the vCore 2.0 hypervisor.
- Resource optimization: optimized RAM consumption during storage operation by approximately 50%.
- Zero-Copy Technology: implemented a reduction in disk space through the use of zero-copy technology.
- Data protection: improved control over the preservation of customer data through a system of instant and automatic snapshots, providing maximum protection against data loss with minimal use of disk space.
Tools have been added to ensure system integrity and facilitate administration:
- Package caching: implemented a mechanism for obtaining and caching a list of plugin packages for each cluster node.
- Healthcheck system: implemented a system that compares installed packages on different nodes and reports discrepancies.
- Self-healing mechanisms: self-healing algorithms have been implemented, a log of internal schedule task execution and control over snapshot creation have been implemented.
Basis SDS offers support for presenting virtual disks via the NBD (Network Block Device) protocol.
To ensure compatibility with various systems, the mechanisms for adding an NBD disk via the command line have been improved, and the ability to specify a subnet mask in the ACL field when configuring access to disks via iSCSI has been implemented. Automatic reconnection to exports in the NBD client has been added.
The new release offers advanced data visualization capabilities. Information about virtual disk templates has appeared in the web interface, and the virtual pool page now displays data about storage routers for each virtual disk and template. To improve documentation, an optional "Description" field has been introduced on the information pages for virtual disks and pools.
Improved the administrator's awareness of the current status of the storage: explanations have been added to the statuses of virtual pools, as well as information about storage routers for each virtual disk and template on the virtual pool page. The user now receives complete and clear information about the state of the system.
A documentation plugin has been integrated, which provides access to manuals and reference information directly from the management interface. This greatly simplifies the process of learning and working with the system, and technical documentation is available in real time with the ability to update.
Notifications, hints and statuses of management objects have also been improved, and a complex for integration with external monitoring systems (Zabbix, Grafana, Prometheus) has been prepared.
Basis SDS offers a block-file interface on top of a pool of disks: traditional SSDs, drives with NL-SATA interfaces, and high-performance NVMe drives.
The software-defined storage system Basis SDS 2.0 provides organizations with the means to store and manage data:
- Horizontal scalability — from three to several dozen nodes.
- High density of storage resources in a single cluster.
- Customizable fault tolerance with the ability to select the optimal redundancy policy.
- Automatic tiering (tiering) between SSD and HDD.
- Unlimited number of snapshots (snapshots) for virtual disks.
- Various access protocols to virtual disks, including NBD, iSCSI, DES and UBLK.
The software-defined storage system Basis SDS provides block devices to both virtual machines and physical servers (bare-metal) via various protocols. Built-in mechanisms allow you to configure data redundancy, as well as regulate the performance and redundancy of the system.
«The release of Basis SDS 2.0 is an important step in the development of domestic data storage technologies. We offer the market a product that meets high international standards in terms of functionality and reliability. Our goal is to provide Russian organizations with a modern storage infrastructure», — said Dmitry Sorokin, Technical Director of Basis.
