IDC estimates that smartphone sales worldwide increased by 6.4% to 1.24 billion units last year.

Despite the year-end growth exceeding 6%, the fourth quarter saw a more modest increase of just 2.4%, reaching 331.7 million units. Overall, global smartphone sales have been on the rise for six consecutive quarters. IDC analysts note that the market's growth in 2024 was not thanks to, but in spite of, persistent macroeconomic challenges, concerns about exchange rates in emerging markets, and ongoing inflation. However, vendors successfully adjusted their strategies, stimulating growth through promotional campaigns, offering devices in various price categories, providing installment plans, and promoting trade-ins. It was also noted that the threat of increased tariffs from the new US administration heightened uncertainty in the industry. As for vendors, Apple took the lead in 2024, selling 232.1 million smartphones (18.7% of the market). Samsung came in second with 223.4 million units (18%). Xiaomi secured third place with 168.5 million units (13.6%). Transsion and OPPO shared fourth place.

However, not all analytical companies arrived at the same figures for global smartphone sales growth. For example, according to preliminary data from research firm Counterpoint Research, global smartphone sales increased by only 4% in 2024, following two consecutive years of decline.

According to Couterpoint, sales of ultra-premium smartphones priced above $1,000 grew the fastest in 2024. In 2025, revenue growth will continue to outpace volume growth: revenue is expected to increase by 8%, while sales volume will increase by 4%, the company predicts.

But the highest growth in global smartphone sales among the analytical companies was reported by another company. According to the latest research from Canalys, this growth amounted to 7%. It is clear that each company had its own calculation methods…
