The company "Basis" announces the release of version 4.5 of the server virtualization platform Basis Dynamix Enterprise. The update expands the capabilities of the "Basis" ecosystem through deeper integration of the platform with the Basis SDN software-defined networking solution, improves the compatibility of Basis Dynamix Enterprise with domestic storage systems, and offers a range of tools to improve performance and automate the management of dynamic IT infrastructure.
Expanded support for domestic storage systems
One of the key directions of development of Basis Dynamix version 4.5.0 was the expansion of compatibility with Russian storage systems. Support for uStor storage systems has appeared, which covers the full set of operations: creation and management of disks, working with images and snapshots, presentation and de-presentation of disks to computing nodes. In addition, the platform now supports working with YADRO TATLIN.UNIFIED storage systems, software version 3.2; backward compatibility with previous versions of Tatlin firmware is preserved. As a result, customers get more freedom of choice of equipment when designing import-independent infrastructure and additional comfort when working with this equipment using the platform.
Efficient use of disk space
In release 4.5, unmap support for virtual machine disks is implemented. Now, when a virtual machine deletes files, the freed space is not simply marked as free inside the guest OS, but is returned to the data storage system. This allows for more efficient use of storage capacity, which is especially important for organizations with a large fleet of virtual machines and when working with thin-provisioned disks.
Development of integration with software-defined networks
Version 4.5 develops native integration of the Basis Dynamix Enterprise platform with the Basis SDN software-defined network solution and offers an updated set of network functions. In particular, when creating virtual machines, you can now automatically connect SDN network segments with the creation of logical ports - this simplifies network configuration and reduces the number of manual operations for administrators.
Automation of node management
Basis Dynamix 4.5 received a mechanism for automatically changing the status of a physical node from “Under Maintenance” to “Working” - the corresponding setting appeared on the “Physical Nodes” page of the platform interface. Together with the host, the virtual machines hosted on it, which were attached to it at the time the host received the “Under Maintenance” status, are automatically launched. The function is available for both individual nodes and entire zones, which simplifies the maintenance of large installations.
Other improvements
In addition to the above, Basis Dynamix 4.5.0 implements a number of important improvements. A Watchdog mechanism has appeared for automatically restoring frozen virtual machines, Cache Write Through mode has been added to improve the performance of the disk subsystem, the initial installation procedure has been simplified thanks to a minimal configuration file, and the platform API specification has been updated to OpenAPI 3.1.0.
“One of the most important tasks in the development of our flagship platform Basis Dynamix Enterprise is to maintain its compatibility with current infrastructure equipment and software. This also applies to our own solution for organizing software-defined networks Basis SDN, which successfully operates in customer test environments and is rapidly developing taking into account their wishes. Our goal is not just to support domestic data storage systems, backup tools or other solutions. We want to give the customer the opportunity to build a fully import-independent dynamic IT infrastructure based on Basis Dynamix Enterprise, without limiting him in the choice of hardware or software vendors,” - said Dmitry Sorokin, technical director of Basis.
