A regular scanner is a threat to the entire warehouse: a new cyberattack scheme has been found

The lack of authentication between barcode scanners and base stations allows attackers to compromise the warehouse network.

Kaspersky Lab has discovered vulnerabilities in wireless barcode scanners that can be used to attack warehouse networks. Specialists presented their research at the Security Analyst Summit 2026 conference.

The problem is related to the lack of authentication between the scanner and the base station. An attacker within Bluetooth range can connect to the station and transmit a sequence of commands mimicking keystrokes. The connected computer will perceive these as employee actions, potentially allowing malicious code to be executed and access to the internal warehouse network to be gained. This vulnerable scenario has been identified in devices from several manufacturers.

Once access to the infrastructure is gained, attackers can disrupt warehouse management systems (WMS), order processing, and goods shipment. Similar threats can originate from other devices, including data collection terminals and thermal printers.

Kaspersky Lab recommends checking equipment before connecting to the network, disabling unused Bluetooth, and restricting access between infrastructure segments. It is also necessary to update software in a timely manner, minimize account privileges, and regularly check the security of warehouse systems.

According to experts, when organizing protection, it is important to consider not only servers and corporate systems, but also peripheral equipment that employees use daily.
