As Yandex reported, PostgreSQL does not have horizontal scaling functions by default — adding new servers to the system and distributing the load between them. However, it allows you to cope with huge amounts of data when vertical scaling does not work — increasing the power of one server.
Yandex emphasized:
With Sharded PostgreSQL, banks and e-commerce companies will be able to scale their business faster and launch new IT products 3-4 times faster. Engineers will not waste resources and time on manual configuration and support for PostgreSQL scaling.
The reliability of the sharded PostgreSQL technology has been tested on Yandex projects and tested by external organizations. In particular, it is used by Yandex ID, Yandex Pay and Edadil. Sharded PostgreSQL is available on the Yandex Cloud platform upon request.
