The main innovation of the release is the GNOME 47 graphical shell, which replaces Mate. The interface and appearance of the environment are adapted to the features of the «Alt» family of operating systems.
«Alt Workstation» 11.0 provides two desktop design options: the «GNOME» style — with a concise interface, and the «Panel» style — with a traditional application menu structure and taskbar for a smooth transition for users from Mate, Xfce, KDE and similar graphical environments.
The operating system significantly expands the list of supported hardware due to the updated kernel 6.12 and drivers. Drivers have been added for Nvidia GeForce 400+ series video cards and higher, version 570.133.07 with improved Wayland support, allowing you to use all the advantages of the graphics subsystem. They provide hardware 3D acceleration in the GNOME 47 environment without additional configuration, are included in the distribution and are supported by «BaseALT SPO» developers. The operation of external drives and docking stations has become more stable thanks to expanded support for USB and Thunderbolt ports.
The «Alt Workstation» 11.0 release is available for x86_64 and AArch64 (ARMv8) architectures. It supports Intel Core processors, including the 13th generation Core i5, i7 and i9 (Raptor Lake) and Core Ultra (Meteor Lake) lines, as well as AMD Ryzen 7000 series (from Ryzen 5 7600 to Ryzen 9 7950X), and energy-efficient Arm devices. Work is underway to create a version of the operating system for «Elbrus» processors.
Many applications have been added for system administrators and IT professionals, as well as for performing everyday tasks in the office, including:
- «Copydel» — for making copies of operating systems;
- GNOME Boxes — for easy creation of virtual machines with 3D acceleration support.
- Ignition — for managing the autorun of applications and scripts.
- «Connection» — easy connection to remote desktops via RDP and VNC.
- «Surguch» — an application for working with built-in electronic digital signatures;
- «Document Scanner» — with a large number of additional settings and a user-friendly interface;
- Planify — task scheduler with synchronization via Nextcloud and Todoist.
- GIMP — professional graphic editor.
In addition, «Alt Workstation» 11.0 introduces the ability to use virtual reality headsets, including via wireless connection.
The «Alt Workstation» 11.0 release is intended for testing, identifying errors and collecting feedback. The distribution is freely available for free use by individuals and for testing. To upgrade to the new version from «Alt Workstation» 10, you must reinstall the system. Until the release of version 11.1, «Alt Workstation» 10.4 remains recommended for purchase.
